Dive Maui offers divers the chance to see both the underwater world of the fringing reefs of Maui and the outer islands of Lana'i. Molokini and occasionally, weather permitting, Molokai. Dive Maui can offer the diver over 30 different spots in diving opportunities. For a general map of the area click HERE
The three main dive destinations are the coastline of Maui, and the island of Lana'i and the islet of Molokini. Within these large areas there are many dive sites at each broad destination. Your seasoned captain and experienced dive guide will assist in choosing the best spot the day you choose to dive. The decision will be based on mainly weather conditions, conditions at the dive site itself, experience and requests of the people on board the boat. The safety and enjoyment of the activity by the customers is our primary concern.
Most boats leaving for the Lanai snorkeling and diving destinations depart from Lahaina area. There are 2 small boat harbours in Lahaina, Lahaina Harbor and Mala Wharf. Please be certain which harbor your vessel departs from and if you need directions the dive shop would be more than happy to draw you a map if the local tourist magazines or the drive guide in your rental car is not sufficient. If you would like one of these publications mailed to you prior to arrival please EMAIL for this delivery. Cost to you to do this will be $6.95. They have valuable free and 2 for 1 coupons and many other discounts and other necessary information to make your stay the best possible experience.
It is a short ride (about 1/2 hr) across the AUAU channel to Lanai where the spinner dolphins and green sea turtles abound. East Lanai is the side facing Lahaina. This is comprised of extensive reef structures with canyons of white sand rivers running through them. The coral is thick like old growth forest and for both directions as far as you can see it is reef. This goes from where you can stand to approximately 80 feet making it great diving and snorkeling. Many sites can be found on the east side. During winter months you will undoubtedly hear humpback whales underwater here and maybe see them from a distance swimming by on the surface.
The south side of Lanai is the real reason this island is the dive destination of the underwater explorers and seasoned divers. Here you will find lava formations, caverns, arches, tunnels, swim-thrus, pinnacles and plenty of marine life as they have all the holes and crevasses in the reef to make their home. Few dive operators travel here so it is less crowded than other destinations.
This partially submerged volcano has one side eroded away by wave action making an open bowl to the ocean. Along the inside rim, perhaps the most popular spot in the state to snorkel, there are plentiful fish and clear water normally. The back wall plummets to depths beyond scuba limits and experienced divers can enjoy more advanced condtions here. The end of the reef facing the old naval target island of Kahoolawe is called Reef's End and has shark ledges, larger fish, drop offs and strong currents on most days. It and the back wall are spectacular dives and should only be done by the more experienced divers. Most of the snorkel boats which incidentally may also take a few divers leave from Maalaea Harbor. Most of the scuba boats leave from the Kihei Boat ramp. If you are an experienced diver it would be wise to ask which type of boat it is that you just booked on. The fringing reefs around Maui are shallow, coral structures with lots of tropical fish and often green sea turtles, eagle rays and octopus. In Hawaii we have over 100 different species of moray eels and many are found here. These reefs are also rewarding night dives. After Molokini often the boat will hug the coast due to the fresh trade winds that come up in that area mid morning. Afternoon dives are normally restricted to the coastline due to weather.
